An encounter with Living Death

Its been a while since I published my experiences. A spate of meetings this year has reminded me that its ok to be personal.

Its been a while since personal stories are shared, be it about family or oneselves. Thank you for asking, sharing and listening even if our meetings are brief, or it has been sometime since we last met.

This is about an experience with a family.
                                                   A harvest of year 2008-2014.

~~---~--A sticky cloy scent peppers the air with a hint of a degeneration.
                                                                                        An encounter with Living Death

                                                   Early 2004 or 2005,

I got news that my grandmother was ill.
Pangs of rushed unfulfillment zips in front of my eyes.

I want my grandmother to be at my wedding,
I want my grandmother to see her my firstborn,
I want my grandmother to still spoil me again.

                                                       Unreligious,
                                                     I started praying
                                                   signals of pleadings
Just a little more time please.

                                                                                                               My 2 single aunts
who are looking after my grandmother lost a lot of
weight.
At one point I remember, one of my aunt, had that smell about her
too.

Some how, who knows how many
                                                                                                    months later she got better.
                                                           How do I know?

                 The smell was gone.

I see my grandmother struggle with not being "useful"
I see my grandmother the matriarch being confused
Roles were reverse,
she didn't call the shots anymore
The starched ironed clothes imperfectly neat
                                                                     The floors clean but unbleached

                      2008
I touched down Malaysia after 18th months in the States,
I walk behind papa up the stairs

He climb up with 1 hand on one knee
left or right I can't remember
My dad is growing old
He will leave me someday

I started to get to know Lee Chin Tee
A woman working for herself in the 80s, a mother, the breadwinner in my family
I resented my mother but Lee Chin Tee
an entrepreneur, an embracer of change and a woman who stuck by our family

through all, I got my strength and determination...and come to think of it probably my playfulness, being outspoken and a host of oddities

My grandmother is still alive,
                                                    so are my parents.

I don't have a full time job because my goal wasn't to make money.
My goal was to get to know my mother, Lee Chin Tee
I won't resent her when I have to look after her.

2 months back, a thought, a feeling came about
                               I hit my goal :D

Yea mummy still annoys me at times, but we can laugh it away together
Yea papa can talk non stop but I can tell him about my day too
Yea I do want a full time job now :D

Grandma I still don't know fully what to do.
She doesn't remember me. She thinks I am someone else,
Today she can't really see much,
And you kinda have to semi shout in her ear.

At lost,in 2011 when I met you,
You told me just hold her hand.

I forgot about touch.
I never hug or kiss my grandmother
after hitting the teens

Thanks Jah Nah

                                                           Through it all
                                                           The encounter with living death
Brought me to pieces on my own mortality
I was stiff and staunch holding my breath.
                                                                       Waiting
                                                                                        Anxious
finding a balance with systems, ideals, and "reality"

Yea la resolving my issues la

To end it all
Just want to say
thank you big and small

cause in some ways
you helped me

remember to be personal, showing the sanctuary when all is noisy in my head, laughing together, sharing your world, giving me silence,
reminding me I am not (insert whomever XYZ is), teaching me the (ABC) and answering all my questions, being an unknowing comfort, supportive, teaching me acceptance, listening to me, putting up with mood swings and me going into my batcave mode, to be comfortable with myself....

                                                         without words,
                                               knowing my own small dance
and balancing with each of you
be it gentle brushings or full on weights
                                                 Thanks for the reminders
                                                          to be in touch

Women

What is the cause of this?
A. Media's portrayal of women and hence we are constantly exposed to a woman of a certain age, body type and skin colour. This includes porn.
B. There are products out there that can help you look younger, fairer, thinner so why not.
C. There are clothing to tuck your tummy, push up your boobs, make your legs longer
D. Read my comments below

Suspended tension in different degrees.
'Nobody Claps Anymore' by Alec Dawson as a whole gives me the same sensation as an Edward Hopper painting.

Remedios Varo

I went to Mexico City to visit Frida Kahlo. She was doing a tour in Europe.
I met Remedios Varo in a book shop on my last day with a cup of hot chocolate.
Beyond falling in Love, her artwork brought me back to a time when all is quiet and dreams meld into many worlds that flickers of a reality felt

Home

Home is a state of mind
manifest in the physical.
Walking through the door
A step away
Into the corridor
to the room
The day's clamps relinquished.
The room is sporadic
Piles of books clothes strewn,
but all in good time.
Music is playing
gently sways the musts
A moth flits about as I type this.
As it settles in a space above me,
a deep breathe of welcoming myself home.

The Wet Market

The wet market can be smelly, wet and chaotic. When I started out this project I was wondering if the traditional marketplace is relevant in todays world of Tescos,Giants and Carrefours. This is the 1st time I am stepping into the SS15 MPSJ Pasar Moden. I remember my parents buying our produce from the market when i was a kid. I find that the wet market is not a place of commerce, it is a place of interaction. On an individual experience, the senses are assaulted with the smells, sight and sounds. I am coerce into interacting with the Aunty and Pakciks when I choose to buy their products. I find that I can get intimate with the food i am going to be consuming as the aunty and uncle share recipes and tell me where the produce comes from. For the people who work here, children have grown up playing in the market and have their own stalls now. The Subang Jaya market has relocated 5 to 6 times around SS 14 and SS 15 before the current location. The current venue is cleaner and spacious compared to other wet markets but drains are shallow and clogs up easily. Parking is also an issue. It is hard to find parking as there are 3 colleges within the vicinity. No parking no customers la. Competition is stiff as there are supermarkets and a Giant just opened close by. I hope the Pasar stays long enough so when I grow old I got somewhere to go and wax lyrical about my joint pains and ulcers

Tuesdays reminisce and catch up on your greens.
This lady grows her vegetables in Rawang - Ting Yong Thai

Wednesdays are always a little fishy.
You never know if you should be happy
that half the working week has passed
or that Fridays is still so far away
- Cittrasari has been selling at the
SS15 market for 30 odd years.
The fishes is from Kuala Selangor.

Thursdays is pretty straightforward.
Looking onwards towards the weekends
- Papathi has been with the Subang market
for 15 years. Only on weekends does
she sets up her stall at the SS15 MPSJ Pasar Moden.

t's time to do the chicken dance
cause Friday is here. Woo hoo
- Mohd Ridzuan in his very words
"Dari 1984 masih bujang sudah buat kerja ini.
Ahh bini sudah ade anak pun sudah besar
masih buat kerja ni." Mohd Sulaimi is his son.
Sulaimi owns the lot at SS15 MPSJ Pasar Moden.

It's Saturday. The inner child breaks free.
- Zhen Wei and Mum opens only on
the weekends at SS15 MPSJ Pasar Moden.
Mum followed Grandma to work since she was 10.
Grandma open daily just down the aisle.
Grandma is 70 and sells vegetables.

Give thanks for restful Sundays
- Ah Chan has been with the market right at
the beginnings of Subang Jaya.
He sells unassuming basics like noodles
and taufu at the SS15 MPSJ Pasar Moden

Then it's back to the daily grind -

POCKETS OF VERDURE

Title : POCKETS OF VERDURE
With burgeoning highways and epic megamalls dotting the Klang Valley, the memory of huge trees lining the streets of Klang Valley lingers in shrinking green pockets. Malaysia is a country that was economically tied to agriculture. Despite a move to the industrial and the service based sector, this project seeks to document and explore the interactions of the urban dweller in the Klang Valley with their gardens in the public sphere

For my friends who are having a child

I am a child

when

I see you in pain
I am in pain

when

I see you laughing
I laugh

Who am I
but a child

A child

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Travelling in Indonesia for a month with my dad at the moment. Now I am in Malang Indonesia looking for a good friend living here. Thinking about friendship sitting on a chair which I was laughing at the profound silliness of Life with my dad, I suppose I am who I am because my parents are who they are.

1 person shared that he/she is excited and terrified of being a parent. :D I told my dad that and he said :"Yea of course. When you were born, a father is also born."

Anyways you are all going to be fantastic parents :D cause no one is perfect la. Love you all and thinking of you and your family

Chance

CHANCE may seem incidentally and random, but for me chance happens because of actions taken base on cycles of decisions. Following the line of thought of chance from the ancient Greek concept and the Buddhist idea of karma, in a nutshell chance is a meeting point. This point visually would be a dot, and potentially leading into a line and so on, or nothing at all.

Chance happens in the human realm when 2 beings of separate thought and personalities meet. A meeting which happens at a point in time X due to an accumulation of previous actions base on decisions made separately and independently from each other. Chance happens when each being acting independently of each other connects even if it’s for a brief moment.

That connection is the meeting point and whether that meeting point becomes a line or more is entirely dependent on the individual beings; Choices and decision of the individual would bring the dot to a line if they each made an effort.

A short story would be bumping into a random stranger and feeling compelled to connect. At this chanced meeting, I can decided to act on my compulsion or not. Chance just created the opportunity to decide. The fun part is, even if I decide to connect there are other variables to consider.

In its simplest form,
CHANCE = Meeting point, which happens when [Being1 (Decision)* + Being 2 (Decisions)*]

Today - 5th July 2011

Ego manic rears its little tail,
with the same old rooster
crowing to its crowning glory.

Anger seeps beneath
benevolence pretence,
I look behind me
and there is it.

The same old tail
wagging its heads,
uncontrollably afraid

I shout for Merdeka
In my tiny stadium,
When the bigger game

Is in my face.

Your tiring looks,
Going on your train,
If time is my life
Then what I do with it
Is my salvation

I preach to you
And I implore
All though its to you;
I’m exploring
The depths of within

Through surface talks
And done deals
Behind closed doors
City living takes its toll
As charted high rises,
sky rockets

Still your smiles comforts ,
The bravery of going outside the grains
Fear seeps in
But you still raise on
Above the cloacks
Of anxiety and repression.

I salute you for standing tall,
I bow down to your arrest.
Friends may fritter to frays,
Please don’t step over the edge

Share your troubles my young heroine
For power sticks like heroin
Remember your passions
And your dreams

That keeps your head
Above the mists.
I love you and you are me.
Ok I won’t give you
The 1 MY=you=we talk.

Believe
I can rally up
What this is all about
But it won’t be sharing
If you and I don’t dissent.

Couldn’t help it,
You know
I got a mouth.

BERSIH - speak up

No true artist can live in a cacoon of an isolated inner world
for we are all have a need to create
and that is why we choose to exhibit.

Art is admired for its techniques, its expression, it's ideas.
One night out with an artist she told me in the end it is the idea that counts.

Working in the Art Gallery, there is a hunger to consume new ideas.

As artist be your medium paint, music, writing, the computer, film ...whatever it is,
we got to voice out.Under normal circumstances I'm not bothered by politics. I know some of you aren't Malaysians but repression is everwhere. I'm not asking you to start a revolution, just maybe come out once in a while and participate.

Time to Voice out and may your voice be heard too.

BERSIH - speak up

A voice that speaks louder
when all speak at the same time
Asking for a clean vote
Whats the big deal

Is there a fear and insecurity
That they aren't going to win?
Well I thought the goverment
is supporting the people?
Or are we supporting them?

There is nothing
to be afraid of
if they are
where they are
When the people
"rakyat" has spoken

For too long
I have been a child
Listening to the fears and threats
Weeping as home is not HOME

We will go overseas to study/work
thinking that it is a greener life
and it is but you know your roots
Are here despite all the prejudices

You know what,
bring your teh tarik talk
to the Bersih roadshow and rally
We can all complain about the injustice
Only instead of sitting on our butts
We can walk and talk
Ok bring your mug of teh

BTW the whole
repeatition of
armageddon proportions
May 13 is wearing thin.
All these slurs
Just shows fear
I wonder why
They are so worried

You can sweat it out,
Little technie that you are
All small bytes count
Voice your disssatisfaction
Spread the BERSIH around
Not like a virus
More like an anti-virus

Dance if you like to dance
and act it out
Do a cook out
Bring nourishments
Play the songs in your voice
Make a mini festival
After all it can be
a street performance
Your stage will be as big
As many actors there are

Capture this moment
join in or youtube it
After all history is made
by the people
the "rakyat"

So if you want to repost this
by all means go ahead
And tag as many as you like
In your FB note

FB= social network = voice = action = change

We would like to announce that there are rallies confirmed in more countries:
